Making a Topographic Map
Time: Two 50 minute class periods
Source: Teacher Developed
Using a Vernier Lab Pro setup and a sound probe, students set up a mock canyon/mountain valley. Attaching the sound probe to a 2 X 4, students scan the canyon with the sound probe. The graph that appears on the screen of the calculator or computer would seem upside down - but the computer interpreted the echo of the sound waves as they went over the canyon. The students interpret the map and turn their graph into a topographic map of the canyon using cm to represent km. After the map is finished, they check with instructor for accuracy.
Tip: If you school does not have a Vernier Lab Pro, check with Region XIII Science Materials Center (512-919-5351) or Austin ISD Science and Health Resource Center (512-414-4552)
