STAT Takes a Stand at SBOE Meeting

President Ross Ann Hill and Sandra West Testify at SBOE Meeting 

   

STAT President Ross Ann Hill addressed the Committee of the Full Board last Thursday.  She advocated for "updated, comprehensive instructional materials at all levels of classroom learning."  Read her testimony here.  

 

STAT Legislative Committee Chair Sandra West was also present, and spoke on the privatization of education as well as the need for science materials.  Read her testimony here.

SBOE Meeting May Impact Science Materials

The SBOE meeting from September 14-16 may impact materials in your science classrooms.  Read the details below, then comment on this post to share your opinion on the necessity of updating science materials.  Please Note: you must be logged in to comment on posts.


From September 14-16, the State Board of Education will meet to discuss items pertaining to K-12 curriculum materials, and STAT is going to be there, advocating for a complete textual system update for science classrooms. 

 

We invite you, the members of STAT, to be present at this meeting.  If you wish to provide your own public testimony, view the SBOE Operating Rules You must register via phone or fax the Friday before the meeting (September 9th).  

 

Public testimony will take place on Thursday, September 15.  President Ross Ann Hill will speak on behalf of the association.

Oklahoma Science Teachers Association Invites You to Their Fall Conference!

The OSTA Fall Conference, the largest and best science professional development opportunity in the state will take place Saturday, October 1st at the University of Central Oklahoma.

”The Branches of STEM are rooted in Science”

  1. get out your calendar and mark the date.
  2. submit your proposal to present.  This year all proposals will be submitted using our convenient on-line form.  DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DEADLINE!  Space is limited.
  3. nominate yourself or someone you know for an position on the OSTA Board. The following Board positions are accepting nominations: President-elect/vice-president, treasurer, elementary director, high school  director, Region 1/NE , Region 3/SW, Region 5/Tulsa Public Schools.  Submit your nomination online HERE.
  4. nominate yourself or someone else you know for an OSTA Award using our electronic nomination submissions forms.  Each year the OSTA awards program seeks to recognize outstanding elementary, middle school, high school and college science teachers.  We also honor outstanding contributions to science education in Oklahoma with OSTA’s highest award, the Jack Renner Award, named for the late, esteemed Science Education Professor from the University of Oklahoma.

If you are exhibitor - OSTA is now accepting reservations for exhibit space at the conference.  Exhibit space utilizes the primary halls and the atrium of Howell Hall on the UCO campus.  Commercial vendors pay a nominal fee  for exhibit space, approved non-profits can exhibit for no charge.  Book your exhibit space using our ON-LINE FORM.

All exhibitors and program presenters must register for the conference.

Submit your answers to our quick 2-question CAST 2011 Jam Session Survey and voice your opinion on this year's programming.  Jam Sessions are 45-minute sessions that run concurrently with workshops, to help jam-pack your day full of learning opportunities!

Governor Perry announced his appointment of Barbara Cargill as SBOE Chair on Friday, July 1. Cargill is founder and director of Wonders of the Woodlands (WOW!) Science Camp. She is an elected member of the State Board of Education, with more than six years of service, and is currently chair of the board's Committee on Instruction.

The STAT Nominating Committee has streamlined its request for STAT Officer Nominations this year.  

 

If you, or a colleague, wish to be considered for volunteer elected office, simply submit your resume, along with preferred office for consideration, to stat@bizaustin.rr.com by August 15, 2011. The Committee will contact those from whom they wish more extensive materials.
