STATFlash: SBOE Announcement

STATFlash:
Mon, 09/16/2013

Dear STAT members,

We are facing another pivotal point in science education and we need your input.

This week, the State Board of Education is meeting. Committee members will hear testimony and make critical decisions about several issues. The first is transitioning to the new graduation plans under HB5. The law allows the State Board of Education to identify advanced courses related to the new graduation program, identify the curriculum requirements for the endorsements, and determine the requirements for performance acknowledgments related to the new graduation program. We need your input as we provide feedback to the SBOE for defining "advanced courses" and which courses should be included for each endorsement.

SCIENCE LEADERS MEET WITH TEA COMMISSIONER

Texas science association leaders met Commissioner of Education Michael Williams to discuss implementation and further policy issues resulting from legislation passed during the recent legislative session.  STAT and TSELA spokespersons thanked the Commissioner for his early support of four years of high school science and pledged to continue to provide input on such issues as teacher preparation (both content and pedagogy), alternative certification, scientific quality of career and technology courses, and college and career readiness.

STATFlash: The End of C SCOPE

STATFlash:
Tue, 05/21/2013

As of August 31 no lesson plans will be available through CSCOPE.

"The CSCOPE era is over. However, what the last several months has proven is that the state will have to create a plan to monitor all on line material in the future so that our schools and classroom remain completely transparent to parents and the legislature knows what is being taught in our classrooms across Texas" Senator Dan Patrick said in a press release yesterday.
